Everyone Needs a Vacation

Vacation Wrap-Up

With my "stay-cation" coming to an end, I enjoyed a mix of activities this past week.

Meeting with friends over lunch, dinner and coffee. Shopping for some fall clothes. Going to the library. Doing lessons from my online classes. Signing up for more online classes. Taking photos. Working with an organizer to de-clutter paper files. Taking sister out for birthday. Hanging out with Gracie. Making pasta. Getting my iPhone 5. Ordering a new lens for my camera. Creating fresh fruit smoothies. Watching the Emmy awards. Catching up on reading. Walking along the nature path and spotting egrets. Making pancakes with fresh strawberries.

Ahhh, vacation...

September Days

September has just been flying by and so has my weeklong vacation. I'm accomplishing things on my list which is good, although there will always be way more than can ever be done. A nice mix of work and play is good and the great news is that this weekend we are expecting very warm weather. That's a great start for autumn. Our trees are not turning color or losing leaves yet whereas some years they began in early or mid September.

There's still time for more play and getting more done - no more sleeping in with Gracie. I feel so guilty getting out of bed once she is all snuggled in on top, sleeping against me. No, there's still more to be done so she'll just have to have a cat nap by herself. I'm off to check more things off my list!

It's a Good Day

Photo processed with the following textures from Kim Klassen for Texture Tuesday: Partings, Scriptededges and Letgo
Why is it a good morning? Because this week is vacation for me. Love, love, love vacation days! Actually, I should say staycation but that's ok. I enjoy being home as much as traveling and I am a nester at heart.

Our first autumn days are more like summer, so it's a great time to be out and about. By the same token, I'm spending quite a bit of time at my computer with the online classes I'm currently taking (more on that later). And I'll continue my quest to get organized as I've done on my last two vacations. I've downsized and de-cluttered but there is always more to do. This time I'm tackling paperwork.

And for fun? Well, I'm getting the new iPhone 5 and I can't wait to use it for the camera as it has more megapixels than my current GS. A birthday lunch for my sister, some photography and a little shopping and who knows what else the week holds. Doesn't matter - it's vacation!

A New Fabulous Decor Board

Last week, while shopping at the mall (actually, I was returning super cute shoes that were not quite perfect), I spotted this beautiful cord board in the window at Francesca's. The frame is very French country romantic and I knew I had to have it.

The cork has vintage writing printed on it which appears to be in Latin (I took Italian in high school but it doesn't look like Italian or French; then again, it is a bit hard to read).
Oh, and the best part too - it has push pins with faux pearls and rhinestones to make it even prettier. I just added a few photos to it with happy pink flowers to complete its initial look.

So happy with my latest acquisition!

Waning Days of Summer

All photos processed with textures by Kim Klassen for Texture Tuesday.
So here we are in the remaining days of summer...

It's hard to think about autumn right now; I'm just not ready for it. Why is it that summer always seems to go so fast? Since this year was cooler than past years, I keep anticipating hotter days. I won't complain; the days have been mostly sunny and pleasant, just not hot. Perhaps they are still to come. After all, in the bay area we typically get some beautiful warm days in September and October.

What do I miss most when summer ends? I love the warmth and lightness of the days and not having to bundle up. Miss Gracie loves the sun, too.

This morning the sun did not come out until 10:30 am or so. Gracie normally goes to her sun spot around 8 - 8:30 each morning. This morning she looked particularly bummed as she planted herself in the spot that normally would have had sun at that time. You can actually see the disappointment in her face. Poor kitty!

Well, autumn is almost here and I'll transition with these beautiful orange gerbera daisies. After all, we're only a month away from seeing pumpkins!

Vintage Style

Yes, I like everything about vintage style. This little vignette demonstrates it with a vintage camera, antique table and shabby chic mirror. The roses? Timeless. A touch of lettering with the font Zapfino and a slight texture on the photo completes the look and feel.

Contemporary is not at the top of my list - I love aged pieces. They each have a story to tell, whether it is known to me or not. That leaves it to my imagination to wonder what secrets each holds. The joy of perusing the flea market is knowing that each item has lived a past, and that it survived through time to have a new future, perhaps in a new way.

This camera above no longer takes photos, but what a wonderful reminder of past days. Did a gentleman use it to take photos of his family? His kids at play, his wife cooking a holiday turkey. Or perhaps the owner was a traveler, who carried it on journeys across trains to states far and wide. I may never know, but it's fun to think about the possibilities.

Color Tray

It's not like I don't have fresh flowers in my house... it's just that these add a pretty pop of color.

Things I Love

Creamy whites, dried flowers, fancy lettering... things I love.

Sending and receiving letters... things I love, too.

These days it's too easy to dash off a quick email. Don't you get hit with a burst of excitement when you see a real letter in your mailbox? I know I do. You can make yours special too; you don't need to know calligraphy. Simply stamp a design or message, add a sticker, or apply some glitter. I admit that I even add glitter to the postage stamp!

My inspiration today comes from my friend June at Laughing With Angels. Her photos are some of the most beautiful I've seen and she inspires me each time. They'll make you swoon, too.

Bedroom Refresh

This week I changed up some things in my bedroom. Gone is the round table in the corner, which has been replaced with the little white table with tray and flowers. Sometimes you just need to create a different or fresh look, no matter how great it's looked before.

The new chair from last week's flea market is now in the corner where the white table formerly was located. I was afraid it would be too much since there's enough furniture in there already, but it turned out great.

The high ceilings help to make the room bright and light.

I use a mixture of faux and real flowers. These gerberas and roses are real, while the white table has some very happy faux gerberas that serve to make the winter cheerier.

What will you change this week?

A Sweet Gerbera Day

Just sharing this sweet gerbera with you. It's a beautiful sunny day today (although still waiting for some hot summer days). A perfect day for heading to the farmers market. Or for Gracie to absorb the sun's rays in a favorite spot (I call that cat happiness). Forget about Nipper, she's the ultimate couch potato cat.

Whatever you do, enjoy your day today!

Flea Market Treasures

Last weekend, I went to one of my favorite local flea markets. Do you like my lovely chalkboard I acquired? I was quite pleased - it was a great price but I almost passed it up. Yes, I could have found a frame and made one myself, but I liked this one so much - it was just perfect. Now, I just need to find some chalk!

My second find was this painted chair with wicker seat. Not that I had a space in mind for it, but I find it hard to pass up white painted chairs. I rearranged my bedroom a bit and now it has a home there and looks quite sweet.

Do you see the sweet little flowers painted on the seat? Once I spotted it, I asked the vendor what her price was. "Oh, nobody has even asked me about this chair today!" was her reply. So a quick negotiation and the chair was mine.

While I was setting up a vignette with the chair, Gracie got into the act.

There is a little glitter and feather bird inside the cage and she had her eye on it.

My silly cat; I had to rescue that bird from her three times!

Back to my flea market finds....

I'm beginning to amass a little collection of vintage salt and pepper shakers. I have several with German glass glitter in them already. While I didn't need to collect any more, the vendor immediately reduced the price by two thirds once I held this in my hand. Well, how could I pass that up? I love that they come with this decorative little tray.

My last find I actually acquired at a small flea market about a month ago. This little blue-green vase was the only treasure I spotted but I am quite happy with it. Don't those gerbera daisies appear happy? They make me happy; oh, what a happy flower they are!

Roses, Roses

It's anything goes for Texture Tuesday this week. So, here are a few favorite photos.

Roses, Roses

Trader Joe does it again. I found these gorgeous roses there yesterday. Love to buy my flowers at the Trader. I also got some beautiful gerbera daisies but these roses were to die for. They started opening up right away once I got them trimmed and into the vase.

I've placed them in my bedroom where there is a pink and white theme going on.

Yesterday, I spent a couple of hours just photographing the flowers in different vignettes. Amazing how fast time goes by when I'm in the zone. Unfortunately, my 90mm macro lens is not working so I could not take the really up close shots. No matter, I'm sure these roses probably would look great shot with any lens. The gerberas are very sweet too but these roses.... make me swoon.
