Summer Fun

Ah, summer. I'm enjoying the warmer weather, sunlight in the afternoon and lighter colors and fabrics.

August is just about here. Still plenty of time for summer fun like browsing at the flea market. I'm looking for vintage ribbon, vintage wallpaper and anything sparkly.

Oh, and did I mention anything pink?! It's always fun to see what you might discover. What are some of your favorite finds?

Summer = Fruit

One of my favorite things about summer is the fruit. I get a lot of it at the weekly farmer's market where it's an experience to shop. I found a new variety of strawberries called the Albion and it was the sweetest I've ever tasted. Heirloom tomatoes have recently come in and I've been enjoying them, too. You must savor those tomatoes because you can only get them July through early October. But what a treat! I recommend them in any recipe. And on a hot day, cold watermelon sure tastes good. I hope you are enjoying the summer fruits. Nectarines are a particular favorite of mine. Which fruit is your favorite?

Scrapbook Expo is Coming Soon

A few months ago or so, I signed up for some classes at the upcoming Scrapbook Expo on August 7 & 8. Last year I made this clock in one of the classes. The funny thing is that they don't show samples of the projects before you register, so you never quite know what you are going to make. I actually thought we were going to make a wall clock. But this is the clock we made and we were given the choice of three paint colors. They did not include white so I had to paint it green in class but the moment I arrived home, I painted over it in white. This year I am taking three classes including one by Tattered Angels, the company that makes Glimmer Mist. The other two are card classes - I can always use some premade cards.

With all my swap items to make for Silver Bella, I am now beginning to wonder why I signed up for these classes! I am almost finished with the first of my five swaps but still have four to go. No matter, I am a workshop junkie and always enjoy creating something. I'll just have to spend more weeknights working on my swaps. Almost one down, and four to go!

Kitty Love

I tried to leave early this morning for the farmer's market. But alas, Miss Gracie would not allow me to leave. No, we must play mousie-pole. You aren't leaving this room, are you? You are staying here with me, aren't you? What, you actually think you are leaving? Well, I guess not, Miss Gracie. No, I'll play mousie-pole with you. After all, family is more important than fruit.

Where Bloggers Create Blog Party

Karen at My Desert Cottage is hosting a Where Bloggers Create Blog Party on July 24th. She was inspired to do this by the book and magazine Where Women Create. So it's time to show off our creative spaces, where we find inspiration, where it all happens. If you'd like to see the spaces of many other creative bloggers, there is a list on her website and it's very long, indeed! I'm sure you'll find much to be inspired by at all the participating blogs, so hop on over.

About my space... I am fortunate to have a spare bedroom which is where I work on the computer, watch tv and create. It may be calligraphy, paper arts, scrapbooking, blogging or more, but it's one of my favorite rooms.

And yes, the cat is part of the room. If you've ever received anything from me, look close and I'm sure you'll find some cat fur somewhere!

It's getting a little crowded but the items I have displayed just make me happy and inspired. I actually redid this room last spring after I took the online class Get Organized and Be Inspired which was about creating a space that you love and works for you. It was great to finally do this after thinking and dreaming about it for several years.

I have the Crop N Style white cubes and the piece on top I found at a garage sale cheap. It was the top of a desk and I placed it on the cubes to give me more storage space. It works great.

The little tv is about nine years old but it works fine and besides, I really don't want to watch that much tv.

The sun was shining bright through the curtains when I took this photo one morning. I love spending the mornings in here as this room gets the sun at that time.

Can you see my fluffy white feather Christmas tree in the polka dot pot?

Well, I must admit I have not put photos into these frames yet. I love the orange color of the piece that came with them! I try to keep a theme of pink and green accents.

One of my inspiration boards. Such a deal from Marshall's.

Inspiration board up close.

Another inspiration board and lots of inspirational pieces!

Love this pattern - it matches the curtains.

Oh, my mannequin! Gosh, I love this. I actually have another one in my kitchen.

Just a little birdie guarding my Eiffel Tower.

A little sign I made.

I often find clothes tags that are so interesting. I hang them to look at or put in my treasure box to make something with them later. I love this mirror which is made to look like a door. Must be that doorknob!

Inspiration board up close.

Love crystals! This was a sconce candle holder to which I just added a ribbon flower instead of a candle.

S is for Sharon, of course. To my lamp I added a gerbera daisy, some yummy silver ribbon from Nordstroms that I fished out of the community garbage can (can you imagine someone throwing that away??), a green beaded tassle and a crystal hanging thingie.

My recent flea market find with supplies. Love this too!

More items on an inspiration board including a collage and addressed envelope I made quite some time ago.
Gracie loves this room, too. Each morning before work she leads me here so I can watch her lay in the sun. I must amuse her for a short while before I try to sneak out. I wish I could stay here all morning too!

Here are some more photos in this slide show. Thanks so much for visiting me today!

A Rose is a Rose

Pink roses, a favorite of mine. My poor rose bush in the yard lost its blooms in the heat last week. Lucky for me, I have my lovely silk roses. They never wither, and I can make them in any color I want. Of course, they don't smell the same... but they are just as pretty in their own way.

Silver Bella Swap Sneak Peek

Two weeks ago while on my vacation, I began working on my first set of swap items. Having the time off was great as I needed it to really make a dent in this project, the Holiday Fat Book. Each of us must make 11 fabric pages (front and back) which we will send to the swap hostess. Upon our arrival at Silver Bella, we will received a completed book bound with ribbon featuring pages from others in the swap. What an exciting night that will be! I decided to use my calligraphy as a focal point on the page. I finished most of the cutting, sewing, ironing, adhering embellishments and have most of page two completed. I've yet to start page one but I made a lot of progress. That was, of course, when Miss Gracie wasn't "helping" me with this project by sitting on the fabric I was trying to cut. I must apologize to the Bellas in advance if any of their pages come with cat fur. Just consider it an embellishment.

Garage Sale Fun

Today I made the rounds on some local garage sales. I scored at one house where there was quite a bit of old jewelry. I got the four pins above which were my favorite pieces. At another house, the woman had several antique mirrors. I usually can't resist mirrors and have many in my home. It's to the point where I don't know where I would even hang another. However, I liked this sweet piece and had in my mind $20 tops as a price. When she said $10, I said "sold"! Not sure where I will hang it but I know it will make me happy to look at it.

Has Your Cat Trained You Yet?

Did you read the article making the rounds on the news boards recently about how cats have specific meows and cries that cause their companion people to react? Well, my Miss Gracie certainly knows that trick! She has taken to a distress call in the morning saying "clean my litterbox, NOW!". I have to admit, I am totally trained. After all, who can resist those cute, furry faces?

Too Hot for the Flowers

Today it was very, very hot. 89 degrees, in fact. My poor flowers were a bit withered tonight when I returned home. A splash of cool water from the hose and they began to perk right up. I do enjoy watering, dead-heading, and light weed pulling. However, I must admit that I'm not crazy about bugs so I don't want to get my hands into the soil too much. It is one of my joys to be able to see colorful flowers outside my window. Just makes me happy.

Photo Editing: Frame-ups and Special Effects

I am taking a class called Photo Editing: Frame-Ups and Special Effects from If you've ever taken a class from her, in person or online, you know how terrific she is. This is a two week class with a new lesson each day. Today we learned about a technique called Through the Viewfinder which makes a photo resemble an old vintage one taken with square format cameras. To try it out, I used this photo I took last week of these roses. I love the effect and it was so easy! I highly recommend any of her classes - she is a wiz when it comes to enhancing photos in Photoshop/Elements. If this interests you, take a look at her website as it is full of good things.

Cute Vintage

I absolutely adore these vintage glass salt and pepper shakers (filled with silver and gold German glass glitter, mind you). These were also in the package I received this week. Petite and sweet. Do you recognize the ballerina cake toppers? The funny thing about this is that I was specifcally looking for old salt and pepper shakers and these ballerinas when I went to the flea market last Saturday. Carole had no idea and had already mailed this package to me. Don't you love when that happens. The ballerinas bring back memories of a birthday I had as a young child with these on the cake. My mom barely recalls this but I'm sure I must have asked for them because I've thought about them all these years. And now I have them, sitting on a shelf just bringing back happy memories.

Happy Mail

This week I received a surprise package in the mail from my friend Carole. How much fun it is to get Happy Mail. The package was filled with yummy trinkets and vintage items that I will use for my Silver Bella projects. I will post photos of some of the items in the next few days but I'll start with the vintage Japanese hand painted rose cabochons. So lovely! I "heart" you, Carole!

Monday Roses

I have to say, I adore vacation days. My first day of vacation was Monday and my friend Sharen came to visit. Don't you love these little roses that she brought me from her garden? They fit perfectly in my little silver vase. So sweet, they begged to be photographed. We had a pleasant afternoon talking art and catching up on each other's life. Today I must continue working on my Silver Bella swaps. I hope to have a design finalized for the Bella Holiday Fabric Fat Book. I'm almost there but that last 20% is always the hardest.

Flea Market Fourth

This morning, I went to the flea market at De Anza College in Cupertino. I've always wanted to go and today seemed the perfect day. As it turned out, it was. I left at 7:25am and got there just before 8:00am before it got too hot or crowded. It took almost four hours to get through it and it was apparently somewhat smaller today because it is a holiday. I had a great time perusing through so many things and came home with some vintage ribbon, glitter, a few items of clothing, some aprons, a sweet pink flower pin and more.

By the time I left, it had gotten pretty hot. I was so into the experience, that I didn't drink any water or eat as I couldn't wait to get to the next stall. Luckily, there is a humongous Whole Foods Market a block away so I went there for a yummy chicken "burger" with avocado, mushrooms and cheddar cheese, plus fresh strawberry lemonade. It was exactly what I needed after spending hours walking around the flea market in the hot sun. I think this is going to be my new tradition for the Fourth of July - what a perfect way to spend the day. I'd love to hear how you spent your holiday.
